Free agency in the NFL started on March 2. My team, the 49ers, had the most salary cap room in the league when it started. On March 2 the first thing we did was to sign former Buffalo cornerback Nate Clements for 8 years @ $80 million with $22 million guaranteed. We then signed former Philadelphia safety Michael Lewis to a lesser deal. Both of these players are standouts at their positions (you would expect Clements to be with that kind of money). When you add them to all-star cornerback Walt Harris, you get one of the most potent secondaries in the whole league.
Just yesterday the 49ers signed former Denver wide receiver Ashley Lelie for 2 years. The 49ers have been mediocre at WR since T.O. left years ago, and they hope Lelie and the expected number 11 draft pick can strengthen us on the offensive side of the passing game.
